One compact charger for your phone, tablet and laptop: that is the promise of a 65W GaN charger with USB-C. But when is 65 watts enough, and what should you look out for? This guide explains it without the marketing fluff.
What is GaN, and why is the charger so small?
GaN stands for gallium nitride, a semiconductor material that switches more efficiently than traditional silicon. The result: less heat, which allows a more compact build at the same power output. A 65W GaN charger like the SYVOX Power 65W is barely bigger than a classic phone charger, yet it charges a laptop.
Is 65W enough for my laptop?
For most thin laptops that charge over USB-C: yes. Think ultrabooks and comparable models that ship with a 45–65W adapter. Rule of thumb:
- Plenty: light laptops, tablets, phones, e-readers, earbuds.
- Works, but charges slower under heavy load: more powerful laptops that ship with an adapter above 65W. During intensive use the battery may top up more slowly.
- Not suitable: gaming laptops with their own round charging plug and no USB-C charging.
Check the adapter that came with your laptop: if it says 65W or less, you are good.
Several devices at once: how is power shared?
Plug in two or three devices and the charger divides the available power across its ports. Your laptop then no longer receives the full 65W. In practice everything keeps charging, just somewhat slower. For a desk setup with phone + laptop that is almost always fine.
The cable matters

Can a 65W charger damage my phone?
No. USB-C Power Delivery is a negotiation protocol: charger and device agree on how much power flows. Your phone never takes more than it can handle.

Does the charger work abroad?
